The Education Ministry has seen a doubling of the number of resignations since the middle of the month.
Portfolio Minister Fayval Williams, while noting the increased resignations since last Friday, says the number is still below the 1,538 for last year, this time.
The Education Ministry has now heard from 854 teachers whose resignations take effect September. This is up from the 427 reported earlier this month.
Mrs. Williams points to the uncertainty some principals and school boards are facing, with resignations coming so close to the start of the new school year on Monday.
She explains that schools were sent strategies some weeks ago, to respond to the resignations.
She says the schools also have access to 1,238 recorded lessons.
The Ministry of Education and Youth also launched a job bank portal to streamline the process of finding teachers and teaching jobs.
Mrs. Williams is assuring that there is a supply of teachers in the system, noting that the island has ten teachers’ colleges which graduate properly trained teachers.
These are in addition to the retired and retiring teachers, final year students pre-trained and part time teachers among others.
The Minister anticipates that there are about 3,119 teachers available.
Mrs. Williams was speaking at a post cabinet press briefing this morning.
