Religious leader cautions Government against partnering with churches to tackle mental health

At least one religious leader is cautioning the Government against partnering with churches to tackle mental health in the country.

In a recent announcement, Prime Minister Andrew Holness said the Government would be pursuing a direct and deliberate programme in partnering with the Church to provide robust intervention that supports mental health in the population.

However, Anglican Priest, Father Sean Major-Campbell says while he supports the initiative’s intention, there are factors that must be considered.

Speaking on IRIE FM’s African Forum hosted by Kabu Ma’at Kheru on Sunday, the Anglican Priest said one factor is that many pastors are not well trained and sufficiently equipped to assist with severe mental health concerns.

He is recommending that the Government considers tackling the root cause of the mental health issues affecting citizens.

According to the clergyman, the Government must not overlook the reasons leading to the frustration among residents.

He said more must be done than just treating the symptoms of mental health.
