$6.5 B in unspent funds for 2022/2023 capital projects, despite need for improved infrastructure

Despite the need for improved infrastructure across the public sector, approximately $6.5 billion budgeted for capital projects will not be spent during this fiscal year, which comes to a close on March 31.

The revelation was made during Tuesday‘s meeting of the Public Administration and Appropriations Committee, PAAC.

During the meeting, financial secretary Darlene Morrison noted that projects in the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health were included in those that would not be completed.

PAAC Chairman Mikael Phillips questioned the over $625 million which will not be spent for primary and secondary infrastructure.

In response, Ms Morrison noted that procurement issues affected the projects within the education ministry, while pointing out that there were delays within the ministry of health.

The ministry of Health & Wellness accounted for the largest unspent funds of some $1.25 billion dollars.
