Caribbean Radio stations in NYC left homeless after sale

Three major Caribbean radio stations in Queens, New York, may be looking for a new home following talks of a sale.

Music News understands that Hope Media Group is acquiring Brokered Caribbean 93.5 WVIP, the owners of the broadcast license used by IRIE JAM Radio, Link Up Radio, and Grooving Radio.

According to reports, Hope Media Group, the owners of the Christian AC “Way FM” network and 89.3 KSBJ Houston and Spanish Christian “Vida Unida” network, has put up an estimated $8.15 million to gain entry into the New York City market.

The move has left many pondering, “What’s Next?”

Micheboo Thompson, a producer and host, at The Insiders Radio since the 90s, in a Music News exclusive Monday (July 3), tells us how this big blow will affect the Caribbean contingent in New York City and ultimately the genre.

WVIP features a Caribbean music format airing programming for the Afro-Caribbean community.

Collectively, this is one of the biggest platforms that advertise, promote, and broadcast Caribbean events, music, and information to further promote Jamaica and by extension Caribbean culture across the tri-state area which include New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.
