Williams says practice of covering locks in schools must end

Students, especially boys who are of the Rastafarian faith and have their hair in dreadlocks may soon be able to wear their hair uncovered.

Education Minister Fayval Williams has indicated that the practice of using tams to cover the locks, needs to end.

The minister was giving an update on the draft dress and grooming policy for schools, while at the Jamaica Teachers Association Conference now underway in Negril, Westmoreland.

She said a persons’ religious practices should be respected.

Ms Williams pointed out that if the religion states that the hair should be covered, then that should be followed.

She said the policy should be published later this week.
