Gov’t wants major infrastructure projects done by skilled Jamaicans

Finance Minister, Dr. Nigel Clarke says the Government wants to ensure that major infrastructure projects undertaken in the next few years are done by skilled Jamaicans.

This, he says is part of efforts which would see Jamaica using its own resources to build out its social and physical structures.

He points to the Montego Bay Bypass in St James, which is being financed through the Government’s Consolidated Fund and implemented by the National Road Operating and Constructing Company (nrocc).

Dr. Clarke says the Government not only wants to use Jamaican funds but also Jamaican skilled workers.

Dr. Clarke notes, however, that more Jamaicans must get involved in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines to meet the skill demands.

He was speaking at the Jamaica Institute of Engineers in Kingston yesterday, as the institution hosted an opening ceremony for Engineers Week.
