Police Sergeant sentenced to 19 years in prison for raping 16-year-old girl

A 37-year-old Police Sergeant has been sentenced to 19 years imprisonment for raping a 16-year-old girl, in June 2019.

Christopher Bennett, who worked for 15 years in the police force, was head of the Denham Town Community Safety and Security branch, in West Kingston police division.

It was reported that the complainant was being counselled by members of Bennett’s team.

Evidence was given at the trial in the Home Circuit Court, that Bennett offered the complainant a ride from the police station, then took her to the Palisadoes Road, in East Kingston, where he sexually assaulted her.

The complainant reported the matter to the police and Bennett was charged with rape.

After Justice Leighton Pusey sentenced Bennett, an application was made by King’s Counsel Peter Champagnie for him to be granted bail pending an appeal, but the judge turned down the application.
