Education Ministry to conduct survey into homework administered to children

Education Minister Fayval Williams has promised that a survey will be conducted into how homework is administered to children, especially those at the junior level who are not preparing for exit exams.

This, in the wake of concern raised by a parent about her child a grade 7 student, being overburdened with assignments while speaking at Thursday evening’s virtual meeting of the National Parent Teachers Association of Jamaica.

The concerned mother related that for instance, her child would be asked to complete an 800 part questionnaire, that was due for submission the next day.

She worried about the impact of missing hours of sleep and being under pressure to complete tasks, on the child’s mental health.

In response, Mrs Williams noted that schools follow set curriculums and oftentimes tend to increase workload as the competition for exam results and ranking among schools, intensify.

She cautioned that the parent’s concern should not be dismissed and pledged to have her team determine if the issue is widespread.
