Education stakeholders to discuss how to increase enrolment in teachers’ colleges to fill gap for some subjects

Education stakeholders are to discuss how to increase enrolment in teachers’ colleges as part of efforts to fill the gap for some subjects.

Many schools have been facing challenges in recruiting teachers as hundreds have resigned and gone to teach overseas.

Some subjects are no longer offered by schools. In some instances, students have no teacher for particular subjects for months, while some schools have combined classes or shared teachers.

Education Minister Fayval Williams acknowledges the gaps, noting that among the subjects affected are mathematics and english language.

While answering questions at a Post-Cabinet press briefing this morning, Ms Williams noted that the Government will have to discuss how to get more students enrolled in teachers’ colleges.

In the meantime, she noted that the provision of more scholarships is high on the list of actions that can be taken.
