PNP continues to voice concerns over possible extension of DPP’s tenure; calls for her to step aside

The People’s National Party (PNP) is calling for Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Paula Llewellyn, to step down from the post.

This, considering controversy surrounding the amendment to the constitution to extend the retirement age for holders of the offices of the DPP and Auditor General (AG).

Among the issues raised, is the alleged lack of consultation on the extension.

Chairman of the PNP Human Rights Commission, Isat Buchanan, says this is the first time in Jamaica’s history that an amendment to the constitution was undertaken without extensive consultation with the opposition and all relevant stakeholders.

Mr. Buchanan says the constitutional amendment set a dangerous precedent.

He wants the DPP to step aside.

He raises further concerns about issues raised by Senior Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions, Kathy Ann Pyke, who has written to the prime minister, requesting an investigation, into the viability of the DPP’s office.

Mr. Buchanan wants the issues highlighted, as well as several others raised by Ms. Llewellyn in her response to Pyke, to be investigated.
